Umm Al Quwain is located along the coast of
the Arabian Gulf, between Ajman to the west, and Ras
Al Khaimah to the east. Its land spreads towards the
interior for a distance of 32 km approximately. The
total territory covers 800 sq km.
The Ruler of Umm Al Quwain is H.H. Sheikh Rashid bin
Ahmed Al Mu'alla.
He succeeded his father in 1981.
Population: around 35,000 inhabitants.
The name “Umm Al Quwain” is derived from “Umm AI
Quwatain”, which means ‘Mother of two powers', a
reference to the powerful seafaring tradition of
this emirate.
The traditional occupation of this emirate has been
fishing and date cultivation. Today’s economy based
on pearl diving, fishing, agriculture and breeding
of livestock has diversified and expanded rapidly
with the foresight of the emirate's development
policy.
The old city of Umm Al Quwain, scenically located on
a north-pointing promontory has retained its peace,
charm and distinctive character. It has developed
between the sea and a deep creek overlooking the
mangrove lagoons and quaint sandy islands and
inlets. The coast to the south offers some of the
finest unspoilt shores to be found in the Emirates,
with clean, clear waters and white sandy beaches.
The enchanting mangroves on the opposite side of the
city provide a haven for fishermen, wildlife and a
variety of birds.
